Paul Flewers kritiserar Trotskijs tes om Sovjet som en "degenererad arbetarstat" i artikeln "USSR Review: Sticking with old dogmas that have failed time and again".
So what we actually had was a temporary process of non-capitalist national modernisation that would enable the Soviet and Chinese elites to build up their societies - not to build a socialist society (why would any ruling elite wish to relinquish its social power?), but, whether they realised it or not, so that they could at some point rejoin the capitalist world.
With the incomparable advantage of hindsight, we can now see that the fundamental error in Trotsky’s thinking was not mainly in his analysis of the USSR, but in his reading of the historical period in which he lived. He believed, in keeping with the Bolsheviks of 1917 and not at all unreasonably for his time, that capitalism had exhausted its ability to develop human productive forces, and that proletarian revolution was the only means of saving society from decline and catastrophe. The post-war boom in western countries postponed such a final reckoning, however.
It was partly due to the launching of the second cold war that large sections of the Soviet elite (but by no means all of it, as Flewers seems to suggest), and indeed - at least in the Polish case - broad swathes of the working class itself, were driven to the conclusion that their future lay with the west. This outcome was not the preordained product of economic deceleration. A more favourable balance of class forces internationally could have led to an outcome more in keeping with Trotsky’s optimistic scenario. Things turned out as they did because the capitalist class captured the initiative on all fronts.

Följande citat ur artikeln "The Intellectuals and the Workers", kunde mycket väl ha varit skriven hans ryske elev:
As an isolated individual, the proletarian is a nonentity. His strength, his progress, his hopes and expectations are entirely derived from organisation, from systematic action in conjunction with his fellows. He feels himself big and strong when he is part of a big and strong organism. The organism is the main thing for him; the individual by comparison means very little. The proletarian fights with the utmost devotion as part of the anonymous mass, without prospect of personal advantage or personal glory, performing his duty in any post assigned to him, with a voluntary discipline which pervades all his feelings and thoughts.
Quite different is the case of the intellectual. He fights not by means of power, but by argument. His weapons are his personal knowledge, his personal ability and his personal convictions. He can attain a position only through his personal abilities. Hence the freest play for these seems to him the prime condition for success. It is only with difficulty that he submits to serving as a part which is subordinate to the whole, and then only from necessity, not from inclination. He recognises the need of discipline only for the masses, not for the select few. And naturally he counts himself among the latter.
I artikeln The “intellectuals” and party principles går han längre och förklarar varför revisionistiska intellektuella bör uteslutas ur det socialdemokratiska partiet.
What the “intellectuals” can bring to the proletariat is solely a superior scientific knowledge. But it is just that which cannot give the elements to one unable to surmount bourgeois narrowness of view. Their intelligence only allows them to graft bourgeois ideas on those of the proletariat, to bring confusion and dispute, and a weakening of the class struggle.

I artikeln om “New Trends of Thought” on the Cultural Revolution beskrivs ultravänsterns idéer men också hur de lyckades omvärdera dem.
Around the same time, in Zhejiang province, there was also a group of people who advocated unity.
But their theory was much more interesting. According to them, "the distinction between the rebels, the conservatives, and the capitalist-roaders does not make any sense. Everybody is a citizen. And as a citizen, everybody has the equal right to vote and to stand for election." They maintained: "Without a general election, there would be no democracy. The public authorities would not be trusted by the people unless their leadership is elected by the people." Furthermore, elections were considered a solution to factionalism. Had the revolutionary committees been established through elections, it was argued, opposing factions would no longer have to intrigue against each other or resort to violence. For this reason, the group put forward a slogan: "No more distinction between the 'rebels' and the 'conservatives,' let's all look forward to a democracy." This idea found support among some workers in several large factories of Hangzhou, the capital of the province. Elections were reportedly held in response to the spread of the idea in some small towns of the province as well. However, just like its radical counterpart, the liberal NT was also severely suppressed in late 1968. It was condemned as "blind faith in elections," "formalism," and even "reactionary trend of thought."

I just came across this new (remarkably stupid) rant by Noam Chomsky against theory, Zizek, and Lacan. Among other things, Chomsky denounces Zizek for not producing any work that "can be explained to a twelve year old in five minutes." It seems that the basic method here, which is unfortunately mirrored by so many leftists, is 'I can't understand this, therefore it is shit.' Perhaps we should throw out the whole bulk of the sciences, since those cannot be explained to twelve-year-olds in five minutes either?

They must give up the temptation to adopt, for their own benefit, the “Western” conception of democracy, meaning: the simple, self-serving desire for a middle class to exist in Turkey as an electoral and falsely democratic client of an oligarchic power integrated into the world market of capital and commodities. This is called: liaison with the masses. Without it, the admirable current revolt will end in a subtler and more dangerous form of subservience: the kind we are familiar with in our old capitalist countries.
We intellectuals and militants in France and other rich countries of the imperialist West implore our Turkish friends to avoid creating a situation like ours in their country. To you, our dear Turkish friends, we say: the greatest favor you can do for us is to prove that your uprising is taking you to a different place from ours, that it is creating a situation whereby the material and intellectual corruption in which our sick old countries are languishing today will be impossible.
Fortunately, I know that in contemporary Turkey, among all our Turkish friends, the means exist to avoid the erroneous desire to be like us. This great country, with its long, tormented history, can and must surprise us. It is the ideal place for a great historical and political innovation to occur.
